The Highland Lakes Squadron of the Commemorative Air Force seeks to restore the Texas Zephyr to her Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) Search and Rescue days. The C-47B-35-DK rolled off the Oklahoma City assembly line on June 7th, 1945. Just 3 days later, the airplane was transferred to Britain’s Royal Air Force (RAF) and became KP-224. Less than 1 year later, KP-224 was sold to the Canadian government where she ultimately found her calling… Search and Rescue for the RCAF. After 34 years of military and civilian aviation service in Canada, KP-224 found herself in the US and became registration N346AB where she flew under the names of Spirit of Hondo and Texas Zephyr (current). We seek to have the markings done in time for the Bluebonnet Airshow (3-16-2023).
Thanks to our Canadian partners and stakeholders, another livery that KP-224 adorned was identified that better meets our needs and vision. Ideally, we restore the bird to her Search and Rescue markings, ie: white top, red band around the tail, side blister windows, the RCAF zigzag down the side, etc. At this point, that would be too expensive, and time is NOT on our side. So, we had settled for all aluminum and minimalist markings. But now - we're targeting a paint scheme from the 1950's that leaves the plane polished and shiny, but with COLOR! We're excited about this update - you should be too! As we consider Canadian destinations for the RCAF's 100-year Centennial Tour, we've had a few Canadian towns / airports request a visit! The most recent being Brandon Manitoba. We hope to be in the position to where we can visit all sorts of aviation entities, museums, and historical landmarks. Stay tuned!
In partnership with other Commemorative Air Force units and Canadian stakeholders, the Zephyr seeks to return to her RCAF Search and Rescue markings as KP-224 and embark upon a 2024 Canadian tour commemorating the RCAF’s 100-year Centennial Celebration.
